Reddit lead generation: find buyer-intent posts with AI

A bounded research workflow for finding public Reddit discussions that reveal problems, evaluation criteria and purchase intent without automating outreach.

A hand uses an orange magnifying glass to isolate a buying signal among public discussion cards.

In brief

Use an AI agent to translate a market question into several narrow Reddit searches, collect a bounded set of public posts and comments, and classify only evidence that appears in the source text. Keep the source URL, community, date and quoted evidence with every finding, and send any response or outreach decision to a human rather than automating engagement.

To find buyer-intent posts on Reddit, give an AI agent a precise market question, several narrow search patterns and a fixed result limit. Ask it to retain the source URL and quoted evidence for every classification. Use the findings for research; keep replies, direct messages and other engagement as deliberate human actions.

Define buyer intent before searching

Buyer intent is not a personality label. It is evidence in a particular post or comment that someone has a problem, is comparing approaches, has named a decision criterion or is actively looking for a product or service. Define the signals that count before searching so the agent does not turn every mention of a category into a sales lead.

  • Problem evidence: the author describes a current obstacle or unmet need.
  • Evaluation evidence: the author asks for alternatives, comparisons or recommendations.
  • Constraint evidence: the post names a budget, feature, geography, deadline or integration requirement.
  • Decision evidence: the author says they are choosing, replacing or planning to buy something.

Exclude general news, jokes, promotional posts and vague category mentions unless the source text also contains an agreed intent signal. A score, upvote ratio or number of comments can help prioritise review, but it does not prove commercial intent.

Search with several narrow queries

Start with the Reddit intent research capabilityand inspect the current Thirdwatch Reddit Scraper. Build separate queries around problem language, switching language and explicit requests for recommendations. Keep the time window, sort order, result limit and optional comment depth explicit so the research has a reproducible boundary.

Run a small sample first. Review whether the returned communities and conversations match the market question, then refine the queries before increasing the result cap. Search breadth is useful only when the acceptance criteria stay stable.

Classify evidence, not people

Ask the agent to label each source as problem, evaluation, constraint, decision or no clear intent, and require a short supporting quotation. It may summarise the expressed need, but it should not infer a person’s income, health, politics, identity or other sensitive traits. It should also say when context is insufficient rather than forcing every result into an intent stage.

Reddit’s public-content policydistinguishes public posts and metadata from private information and places material restrictions on misuse, profiling, harassment and spam. Public visibility is not unlimited permission to build personal dossiers or target individuals.

Preserve context and provenance

Keep the source URL, subreddit, retrieval date, post date when returned, title, relevant text, quoted evidence and the agent’s classification in separate fields. If comments change the meaning of the post, retain the specific comment text and its relationship to the original source. Mark missing dates or deleted material as unavailable rather than filling the gap from memory.

The final output should separate direct evidence from interpretation. A useful research row says “asked for an alternative to X because Y” and links to the discussion; it does not claim the author is a qualified buyer merely because the conversation resembles one.

Keep engagement human

End the automated workflow at a research brief or review queue. Do not use the results to mass-message authors, auto-reply across communities or generate repetitive promotional posts. Reddit’s spam guidanceprohibits repeated or unsolicited mass engagement and specifically warns against tools that facilitate spam.

Use Scrollport discover and inspect to select the current Reddit intent tool.
Search these query families separately: [problem language], [comparison language],
[switching language] and [recommendation request]. Start with a small bounded sample.

For each result, return: source URL, subreddit, source date when available,
intent label, a short exact supporting quote, expressed need, named constraints
and confidence. Use "no clear intent" when the text does not support a label.

Do not infer sensitive traits, draft outreach, post replies or send messages.
End with recurring themes and a human review queue.

A human should review the source context, applicable platform terms and any commercial-use requirements before deciding whether or how to engage. The research workflow discovers evidence; it does not confer permission to contact anyone.
